With SEMrush, finding low-competition keywords has always been easy and fun.

So why do you need low-competition keywords? 

When you start competing with high-ranking keywords, it is hard because authority entities or people are already ranking.

But this is where everything changes; when you look into low-ranking keywords, those are easy to rank and go in your SEO plan.

Before, dive in. Let me be clear: finding ranking keywords isn’t easy if you haven’t done your basic research.

What are Low-Competition Keywords?

Low-competition keywords are regular search queries (keywords) but with a low volume. There will be fewer people who are searching for those terms.

Let me give you an example with:

Now, look at this with the same keyword but with something more specific.

Obviously, you will be thinking, why should we target low-competition keywords? What are the benefits of targeting low-competition keywords? 

Cool, when you target low-competition keywords, it will be easy to rank, and there won’t be any significant effort to put in an off-page strategy.

Also, low competition keyword doesn’t mean it isn’t valuable for business oriented query. As in the above example, you can see the difference.

How to Find Low-Competition / Low-Hanging Fruit Keywords for Your SEO

You might be new to “low-hanging fruits” most SEO uses this term for different situations, but all mean the same. Low-competition keywords are nothing but opportunities : )

These are low-competition keywords with high traffics. Easy to target, easy to rank.

You can also find these with Google Search Console if you are familiar with them and has a website already.

But, if you are new you must take this advantage and target more low-hanging fruit. So you can get more traffic on the go.

How to Find High Traffic Keywords with Low Competition Keywords with SEMrush

You can easily find low competition keywords with high with 3 steps using the SEMrush keyword magic tool.

Step 1: Define your seed keywords
Step 2: Expand your seed keyword list
Step 3: Use a filter 

And tada, you got your low competition keywords with high traffic. But that’s not all.

Step 1: Stealing Competitor Keywords (Building First Set of Keywords)

Before starting, you need to know who your competitor is, so start the organic search. You can use Google or SEMrush Organic Research.

Let’s say this is what you do: “cab service in Kochi.”

Open google.com, search your seed keyword “cab service in Kochi,” and copy the first competitor URL.

Once you have your competitor open SEMrush and 

  • Go to SEMrush Organic Research
  • Enter your competitor URL and hit search

Step 2: Expanding Your Low-Competition Keywords

Make sure to choose the country, I live in India, so I’m going with india as my location.

Click search, and you will find magic.

Now scroll down and click View all keywords.

Make sure to stay in the same country or desired*

Now, you have plenty of keywords to work on.  Here, you can see what keywords are getting traffic. Here, they are getting good enough traffic for their branded search.

Don’t get lost in the information trap; I know this is so much as if now as you go, this will be easy and less overwhelming.

Now you have a ton of keywords, so what’s next?

Step 3: Filtering using Keyword Difficulty Filter

Focus on the KD% column. We will talk more about this in this guide because we evaluate and select keywords based on KD% (keyword difficulty)

We can consider several other factors, but now, we can concentrate on KD% for this guide.

Now, use the keyword filter from above and set it very quickly, or you can set a custom range if you want to.

Here, we can go very quickly, as if now. Select Very Easy and apply.

BOOM! You are ready with low-difficult keywords that can be targeted right away.

Note: You can create a keywords or phrase filter with KD% to get more business intent keywords.

See, we got 263 keywords with high traffic and low volume.

You can do this process with 3 or more competitors and come up with a good number of keywords you can target.

Things to Remember

When you are starting out don’t compete with authoritative website because it’s hard rank as well as getting traffic. So make sure go with low hanging fruit / low-competition keywords to get initial head start as a new website.

  • Find your competitor from Google, copy the URL
  • Open SEMrush
  • Paste your competitor URL in organic research
  • Click sell all keywords
  • Filter KD to very easy
  • Create the same process as your competitors
